How to Set WooCommerce Coupon Rules with Advanced Coupons?
We might offer coupon codes for better conversion rates while running an online shop using WordPress and WooCommerce. Promoting your products with a coupon will undoubtedly help you increase your profit. Thankfully, WooCommerce is offering the coupon feature at its core.
This article will show you how to set the WooCommerce coupon rules with the Advanced Coupons WordPress plugin!
Advanced Coupons
By default, WooCommerce offers coupon features. But if you like adding more features, you could consider using a coupon plugin like Advanced Coupons. Advanced Coupons is a freemium WordPress plugin that will help you add coupon rules based on the user role, cart condition, URLs, scheduling, etc.
The Advanced Coupons Lite plugin is available on the WordPress plugins repository. If you check the product page, you can see that the plugin got 1000+ active installations within a short period.
With the free version plugin, you will be able to
- Run BOGO deals
- Create coupon categories
- Restrict coupons by user role
- Apply coupon with custom URL
Etc.
But if you get the premium version, you can let the user apply coupons based on different conditions. However, you can set a few coupon rules with the free version plugin. On the other hand, with the premium version, every limitation got unlocked!

Next, let’s see how to customize the coupon rules.
Total Time: 15 minutes
Install Advanced Coupons
The first thing you need to do is, log in to your WordPress admin area. Afterward, install the Advanced Coupons WordPress plugin in the Add New Plugins section.
Create a Coupon
Now, you are ready to set custom rules for your coupons. If you don’t have any coupons in your shop, create one. WooCommerce coupons can be made through the Marketing section.
Enter Coupon Code
If you already got coupon codes, leave this part. Then, when you create new coupons for your shop, all you need to do is, enter the code and a description for easy identification.

Open the Advanced Coupons Settings
Right below that section, you can see the Advanced Coupons plugin options.
We will give a 50% discount on all purchases using this coupon. So, configure the General Settings accordingly. However, the Add Products, Scheduler, One-Click Apply Notification, Shipping Overrides, etc., are premium features. So, we can’t configure those using the Lite version plugin.
Here in this article, we will be showing you how you can create a basic BOGO deal, restrict coupons for specific WordPress user roles, and how a user can apply coupons automatically by visiting custom URLs.
Create a BOGO Deal
BOGO stands for Buy One Get One. It’s a common marketing tactic that will help you increase your sales. And with this Advanced Coupons WordPress plugin, we can create a customized BOGO deal inside our WooCommerce shop.
Let me show you how.
You will indeed get some limitations in the BOGO deal customization there. However, it’s pretty simple than you think. In the coupons section, you can see the customization options for BOGO.
Configure Products
There you will see two main configurations.
Trigger Type

In the free version, you can choose only specific products. Using the premium plan, you can configure any combination of products or product categories. We have created two test products and added them to the BOGO section.
Save the Deal
As you can see in the above screenshot, we have chosen a discount of 100%. So when someone uses the coupon to purchase the first product, they will get a 100% discount on the second product’s price. Once you have done that, save the changes.
And you are good to go. This is an excellent chance to offer combo packs and similar deals.
Enable Role-Based Coupon Restriction
The WordPress CMS will accept user registrations and everything with membership. If you are using a membership plugin to take care of it or using the WooCommerce-based user roles, you need to restrict the coupon usage according to roles sometimes.
For example, let’s say you are running a membership website with premium courses. Plus, you have divided the membership plans into two main ones. When the first plan offers basic courses, the other can offer more advanced courses with limited-time coupons.
In that case, you must restrict the coupon usage according to the user’s role.
You won’t see so many customization options on the plugin settings page. Instead, you only see a message you can display when an invalid user tries to use the coupon.
Configure the Options
We will be doing the full customizations through the coupons settings page.

Under the General Settings, you can see the Role Restriction option. Ensure you have enabled it, choose who you need in, and are ready.
Add Every Role You Need
We will be able to add multiple roles to the options.
If you need to add a unique error message for the coupon, you can edit the same from there. Or, the plugin will show the error message we have globally.
Once you are done, publish or update the coupon code. From now on, the coupon will only work for your chosen ones.
Customize URL Coupons
When you promote the deals and coupons through emails, we probably recommend adding a custom URL to the newsletter to automatically give the user a discount. Typically, a user needs to visit the product page, add it to the cart, and apply coupons at checkout.
Well, with a single URL, we can apply the coupon. So we can skip the abovementioned steps and improve/ speed up the process.
Under the plugins’ settings, you can see a section for creating coupons.
Configure the Options
Select it, and you will see the customization options.

You don’t need to change the URL prefix in their settings. The default one – Coupon is good enough. Then, configure options like
Redirection URL after applying a coupon
Redirection URL if the coupon is invalid or visited
Success message
Coupon applying the failed message
Field hiding
Etc
Check the Settings
Once you have configured those, you can create coupons for your customers. On the coupon creation page, you will see the URL settings.
Modify URL (optional)
The plugin will default modify the coupon URL according to our chosen coupon code. But you can change it and make it a unique one. In our case, we have added SAVE50 as the coupon code. And our coupon URL will look like https:www.example.com/coupon/save50 without any other modification.
Use the URL override feature if you need to add something else to the URL.
We have just published our coupon. So when someone visits that URL, the coupon will be applied automatically. Don’t forget to set the basic settings like discount type, amount, expiry, etc.
